TEACHING FOR GLOBAL IMPACT (Experiential Learning and Heritage Interpretation)

Through transformative tourism, participants will learn how to empower students with essential skills, fostering empathy, ethical exploration, and a profound respect for cultural heritage and the environment. Transformative tourism involves immersive, hands-on and reflective activities that challenge individuals to engage with new cultures and environments. It fosters self-discovery, curiosity, empathy and develops intercultural competences. These experiences aim to shape responsible, culturally aware and environmentally conscious global citizens.
This kind of tourism is responsible and sustainable and it has been recognised as a global force protecting the planet. Our course draws inspiration from this ethos, inviting participants to incorporate its underlying goals in their teaching practise. These goals are in direct line with the aims of the 21st century pedagogy and of a school curricula – which aim at cultivating future global citizens who possess a profound understanding of diverse culture, having the competency to engage in responsible citizenship and contribute positively to a interconnected and multicultural world.
Our course equips educators with the neccessary pedagogical tools to achieve these aims.
Participants of this course will discover how transformative tourism is a catalyst for environmental and social awareness, through experiential, project-based learning and a variety of learning practices.
This course is designed to demonstrate how different methods and tools such as storytelling in heritage interpretation, can be used as a teaching strategy to create emotional connection with students, making lessons more impactful.
OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:
- Leverage heritage interpretation to connect students with the historical, cultural, and ecological significance of travel destinations.
- Cultivate experiential learning opportunities that encourage lifelong skills and global consciousness.
- Harness the art of storytelling to create compelling narratives that resonate with students and inspire ethical exploration.
- Develop strategies to integrate transformative tourism concepts into their teaching methodologies.
- Design experiential learning activities that foster empathy, cross-cultural understanding, and critical thinking
METHODOLOGY:
The course’s dynamic sessions includes theoretical lectures, hands-on activities and group discussions. Our methodological approach involves an interactive participation, and is derived from the methods used and tested out in our professional practice and collaborative projects. Participants will engage in immersive activities mirroring transformative travel encounters, nurturing environmental and social awareness. Expert facilitators will guide educators in crafting engaging storytelling techniques and experiential learning modules. Through this experiential approach participants will gain the skills and confidence to inspire students to become ethical, culturally sensitive, and environmentally conscious global citizens.
